2017 - Awards Season: Golden Globes - Nominations

December 11, 2017

The Shape of Water

The Golden Globes nominations are the second major Awards Season set to come out. Sort of. (WGA announced the nominations for TV, radio, etc., but not their theatrical nods.) It is still very early in the year, so it is hard to say if there are any real snubs, or if there are any real favorites. The Shape of Water led the way with seven nominations, while The Post and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri were right behind with six a piece.

The categories and nominees are...

Notes and Reactions...

  • The Shape of Water led the way with seven nominations, and that could help its box office chances. It’s got a lot of room to expand and a high enough theater average to justify that expansion.
  • On the other hand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’s theater average is less than $2,000, so it could lose theaters this weekend, despite the large number of nominations it earned.
  • The Big Sick was shut out. My favorite movie of the year got nothing in terms of nominations. That’s unacceptable.
  • Get Out earned two nods, but none for its writer-director, Jordan Peele. On a side note, it was classified as a comedy, which is just not right. At this point, I think the Golden Globes should just create a new set of categories for Genre films: Fantasy, Sci-fi, and Horror.
  • Greta Gerwig was snubbed for Best Director, again. This appears to be a pattern.
  • The Boss Baby got the nod over The Lego Batman Movie. Really?
