2017 Awards Season: PGA Nominations

January 5, 2018

Wonder Woman

The Producers Guild of America finally finished announcing their nominations. (They spread out their announcements for reasons I’ve never quite understood.) It is a strange year for the PGAs, as there was a tie resulting in 11 films being nominated for the top prize.

The categories and nominees are...

Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures

Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures

Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures

Notes and Reactions...

  • With 11 nominations for the top prize, it’s not surprising that there is no big snub to talk about. I have my favorite, The Big Sick, but none of these really look out of place.
  • For the second year in a row, there is a comic book movie included in the list of nominations. It was Deadpool last year and Wonder Woman this year. Frankly, I thought Logan would have had a better shot at the nomination, but I’m still pleasantly surprised.
  • The animation list is a mess. There’s no The Breadwinner or Loving Vincent. If Coco doesn’t win, then they need to retire this category, because the people voting on it don’t know what they are doing.
  • Jane has to be seen as the overwhelming Oscar favorite for best documentary at this point.
