Friday Estimates: Incredibles Smashes Animated Records

June 16, 2018

Incredibles 2

Incredibles 2 opened with $71.55 million on Friday. To put this in perspective, it is already the biggest digital animation of 2018 and even if it doesn’t sell a single ticket on Saturday and Sunday, this would still be the fifth biggest opening weekend for a Pixar film and the 13th biggest opening for an animated film. Assuming its 93% positive reviews and its A plus from CinemaScore help its legs, it could top Solo: A Star Wars Story’s running tally by the end of the weekend. On the other hand, an opening weekend of $180 million seems like a solid goal after an opening day like this and that will put it on pace for over $500 million domestically.

Ocean’s 8 was next with $5.92 million, which is 62% lower than its opening Friday. This is a little sharper decline than I would have liked, so it will likely earn $20 million instead of our predicted $21 million.

Tag started with $5.4 million on Friday, putting it in third place. Mixed reviews and a B plus from CinemaScore suggest average legs and our prediction of $14 million seems even more likely now.

Solo: A Star Wars Story and Deadpool 2 were neck-and-neck with $2.34 million and $2.3 million, which is almost exactly as we expected they would make.

SuperFly is struggling with $1.87 million on Friday for a three-day total of $4.01 million. It should still match low end expectations with nearly $6 million over the weekend and $8 million in total. The film’s reviews are mixed and it earned a B plus from CinemaScore, so its legs going forward won’t be bad. That said, its theater average isn’t high enough to encourage theaters to keep the film for very long.

On the limited release front, Gotti opened with $614,000 in 503 theaters. It could have been worse. With 0% positive reviews, it could have been much, much worse.
