Home Market Releases for September 11th, 2018

September 10, 2018

Hearts Beat Loud

It is not a very busy week on the home market. Ocean’s 8 is the biggest release of the week, but it is not a Pick of the Week contender. In fact, there was only one real contender for that title, Hearts Beat Loud on Blu-ray. That said, Ocean’s 8 is worth picking up, as is Modern Family: Season Nine.

At Home in Mitford - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
The latest Hallmark Channel original movie to hit the home market. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but it is selling rather well.

Barbie: Dolphin Magic - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This is one of the most popular direct-to-video franchises around. I’m not in the target audience, so my opinion doesn’t carry a lot of weight, but fans of Barbie know whether or not they want this DVD.

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Eleventh Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
The upcoming 12th season will be the show’s last. Its reviews are still great, as are its ratings, but I never became a fan of the show.

Chicago P.D.: Season Five - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I’m not interested in any of the Chicago franchise and I’m burned out on the police procedural genre.

Christine - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
I like this movie more than the average critic and I would have been interested in grabbing the 4K release, even though I don’t have a 4K setup yet. However, there are no new extras on this release, so that’s not an issue. It is selling really well, so perhaps other fans are not as disappointed with the lack of new extras.

The Great British Baking Show, Season 5 (UK Season 3) - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
One of the only Reality TV shows I like, mainly because it isn’t really competitive. Everyone looks like they are having fun.

Hearts Beat Loud - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Kiersey Clemons plays a young lady about to go to college. She and her father record one of their weekly jam sessions and it becomes a viral hit. The film earned amazing reviews and did well at the box office, for a limited release. Extras include an audio commentary track, interviews, live performance, and more. It is worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Hope Springs Eternal - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
Mia Rose Frampton stars as a high school student who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Because she doesn’t have a future, she doesn’t plan for the future and isn’t too worried about graduating, college, etc. Then she learns her cancer went into full remission and she doesn’t know how to react. The reviews are good and it is worth picking up.

Modern Family: Season Nine - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This show is off its peak, but it is still entertaining enough to be worth picking up. This upcoming season is probably its last, so hopefully it will go out on top.

Ocean’s 8 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Como Pack
Video on Demand
The gender-bent delayed sequel to the Ocean’s Eleven franchise. Its reviews are about average for the franchise, while it is currently the biggest hit for Warner Bros. this year. (It won’t stay on top for long.) Extras include a trio of featurettes and some deleted scenes. It is worth picking up, but it is not a Pick of the Week contender.

Scooby-Doo! and the Gourmet Ghost - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
Next year is this franchise’s 50th anniversary. There are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, so it is hard to say if this installment is better than average, but it is selling really well, so there are a lot of excited fans who aren't willing to wait for the reviews to come in.

Scorpion: The Final Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A TV show about a group of super geniuses who solve high tech crime. The show’s first season reviews were not good, but its rating kept it alive for four seasons, which is better than most shows manage.

Superfly - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film won’t lead to a revival of the Blaxploitation films, but if you are a fan of the genre, it has its merits.

This is Us: The Complete Second Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This drama has been described as emotionally moving by most critics, others just warn viewers that they will cry. The reviews are excellent and the DVD is worth picking up for fans of the show.

Tideland: Special Edition - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Terry Gilliam was coming off The Brothers Grimm, which dealt with a heavy amount of studio interference. As a result, he decided to independently finance this film, so he would have 100% control. Did it help the final product? Read our review for my opinion.

The Tree of Life: Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I liked parts of this movie, other parts I though had, “pacing issues”. The original release had only a 30-minute featurette, while this new release has some additional archival interviews, as well as some new interviews. It is worth picking up if you are a fan of the director.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Action Heroine Cheer Fruits: The Complete Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Aokana: Four Rhythm Across the Blue: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Big Wednesday - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Brain Dead - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Cold Water: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Joni Mitchell: Both Sides Now - Live at The Isle of Wight Festival 1970 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
ReLIFE: Season One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Seventh Sign - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Tokyo Ghoul: Season One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Witching Season - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Yona of the Dawn: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Cold Water: The Criterion Collection is arguably the best secondary Blu-ray release of the week, but there are also a trio of Anime titles: ReLIFE, Tokyo Ghoul, and Yona of the Dawn, that are worth picking up.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Batman: Assault on Arkham - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Batman: The Killing Joke - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Christine - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Ocean’s 8 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Como Pack
Robin Hood - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Como Pack
It’s a relatively busy week for 4K releases with five of them coming out. This includes the biggest release of the week, Ocean’s 8.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
I had two Megasets when I first compiled this week’s list, but both changed released date.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
The Children Act - Reviews - Video on Demand
Sicario: Day Of The Soldado - Reviews - Video on Demand
Two Trains Runnin’ - Reviews - Video on Demand
Uncle Drew - Reviews - Video on Demand
Sicario: Day Of The Soldado and Uncle Drew are the only first run releases coming out as secondary VOD releases this week. Both earned nearly identical reviews, but I’m not really interested in either. Maybe if I were interested in basketball, I’d check out Uncle Drew.
