Incredibles 2

This is either an amazing week or a terrible week, depending on how you look at things. It is amazing, because there is a trio of releases I was really looking forward to reviewing: BlacKkKlansman, Incredibles 2, and Christopher Robin. It’s a terrible week, because none of those screeners showed up. I normally don’t like giving the Pick of the Week when I’m still waiting for the screener, but that’s not an option this week, so Incredibles 2 wins.

Black Clover: Season One Part Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
One of the worst shounen Anime titles to come out in recent years. It’s derivative and the lead character is highly irritating. Skip it.

BlacKkKlansman - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film’s reviews are amazing and it is a contender for Pick of the Week. However, the screener only arrived on Monday, which is simply not enough time to get a review done in time for this story to be published.

Christopher Robin - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I’m waiting for a screener for this film. Its reviews are only good and not great, but Winnie the Pooh is one of my favorite Disney characters, so I’m really looking forward to this one.

Destination Wedding - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
I like the cast, but the reviews are mixed, so maybe stick with a rental.

Doctor Who: Shada - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This is a lost episode, but not lost in the usual sense of the word. Only part of the story was filmed before a strike at the BBC ended production. The unfilmed segments have been recreated with animated and voice work from the original cast. If you are a fan of the show, then this is a must have.

Elementary: The Sixth Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
One of two English-language Sherlock TV series that was running concurrently. (There’s a Japanese TV show that began earlier in the year that is coming to HBO.) This was the better of the two and is worth picking up, if you like mystery TV shows.

Girls vs. Gangsters - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
I decided to pick up a screener to review essentially randomly. It was a bit of luck on my part, as it was the only screener for this week that arrived on time. Was it also a hidden gem? Read our review to find out.

The Good Fight: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is the spin-off from The Good Wife and its reviews are just as good.

Incredibles 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Movie Only) or Video on Demand (With Bonus Content)
I’m still waiting for the screener for this title. Usually Disney are really good at getting screeners out to me in time, but there’s a rotating strike at Canada Post, so things are getting delayed. Even without getting a chance to dig into the extras, I can tell that this is clearly a Pick of the Week contender.

The Last Sharknado: It's About Time - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This franchise has overstayed its welcome. Speaking of the franchise, you can also buy the Blu-ray Box Set this week.

Papillon - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This remake isn’t bad exactly, but the original is just much better, so unless you are interested in this film specifically for the cast, it is better to stick with the original.

Patlabor Ultimate - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
An Anime franchise set in the distant future of the year 1998. ... This is one of the first Anime releases I watched and the fact that the film was originally set a decade in the future, but it is now two decades in the past hurts. It’s one of the signs that you are getting old. As for the Blu-ray box set, there’s a lot of value here. There’s 31 hours of Anime across 15 discs. If you are a fan of Mecha Anime, especially from the 1980s, then it is a must have. It would also make a great Christmas gift.

Poldark: Season 4 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Season four’s reviews really dropped from season three, but they are still good enough to be worth picking up. Hopefully there won’t be a similar drop when it comes to the fifth and final season.

Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Space Battleship Yamato, a.k.a., Star Blazers is an Anime franchise that has been around for a long, long time. The first episode of the original show aired back in 1974. This version has earned excellent reviews and it is easily worth picking up for fans of the show, or for fans of Space Opera Anime in general.

Superman - The Movie - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
This movie is still one of the best super hero movies ever made and I would be interested in seeing how well the special effects hold up on 4K. That said, most fans of the movie already have the film on Blu-ray and they haven’t made the leap to 4K yet.

The Thing: Steelbook Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This is one of the best Sci-fi horror movies ever made and it is a must have. However, I’m not a fan of steelbooks and this has been released on Blu-ray too many times to recommend any new release.

Who is America - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A screener for this TV show arrived on Monday, which is far too late to get a review done. That said, I actually requested it to see if it was worth including in this year’s Holiday Gift Guide, so it is early for that.

The Woman in White - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A BBC mini-series based on the mystery novel written in the mid 1800s. The reviews are good and fans of the genre should be happy to pick it up.

Christmas Releases - Buy from Amazon:

Benji's Very Own Christmas Story - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Blaze and the Monster Machines: Blaze Saves Christmas - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The Brian Setzer Orchestra: Christmas Rocks! LIVE - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Coming Home for Christmas - Reviews - Video on Demand
Christmas Manger - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Christmas on the Coast - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
My Christmas Love - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
My Christmas Love - Reviews - Video on Demand
Like most weeks, Hallmark Channel original movies lead the way on this list.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Art School Confidential - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Bel Canto - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Beyond the Sky - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Big Trouble - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Galaxy Angel Z Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Grindhouse - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Home Invasion: In Concert At The Royal Albert Hall - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Lisbon - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Loving Pablo - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Mara - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The Rolling Stones: Sympathy For The Devil - Reviews - Reviews
Sleepwalkers: Collector’s Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
A Story from Chikamatsu: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
It isn’t a great week for secondary VOD releases. Any time Criterion releases a Blu-ray, it is worth paying attention to. I think Big Trouble is underrated, but that’s a personal opinion. Meanwhile, Galaxy Angel Z Collection is earning good reviews and it is worth checking out for Anime fans.

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Air Force One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
BlacKkKlansman - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Incredibles 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Law Abiding Citizen - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Sherlock: Season One - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Superman - The Movie - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Transformers Box Set - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Wreck-It Ralph - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
The only 4K releases I’m interested in are the two Disney titles and Superman - The Movie.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
No megasets this week, which is a little odd for this time of year.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
Billy Graham: An Extraordinary Journey - Reviews - Video on Demand
Here and Now - Reviews - Video on Demand
Kin - Reviews - Video on Demand
RBG - Reviews - Video on Demand
River Runs Red - No Reviews - Video on Demand
RBG is by far the best VOD release on this week’s list, but I would wait to buy it on Blu-ray.
