Theater Averages: Luce and Nightingale Sing a Sweet Song

August 8, 2019

Luce

It was a busy weekend on the theater average chart with five films in the $10,000 club. Luce led the way with an average of $26,597 in five theaters. This bodes well for any future expansion. The Nightingale was next with an average of $20,041 in two theaters. Jay Myself arguably had a stronger opening, earning $18,909 in one theater over the weekend for a five-day debut of $27,571. Exit managed an average of $16,221 in two theaters, which is excellent for a foreign-language film and hopefully means more Asian movies will be released here. The final film in the $10,000 club was the overall box office champ, Hobbs and Shaw, with an average of $14,117.

Only one of the other new limited releases to do well was Love, Antosha with an opening weekend of $7,150 in one theater. Them That Follow did okay with an average of $4,379 in three theaters. On the other hand, Piranhas struggled with $2,898 in its lone theater. Meanwhile, Grateful Dead Meet-Up at the Movies 2019 was a Thursday special engagement release earning nearly $500,000, meaning it barely had a presence over the actual weekend and only managed an average of $947 in four theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Echo in the Canyon actually made it to $3 million, which is excellent for a documentary. That’s as far as it will go, but it is still enough to celebrate.
  • The Farewell reached $6 million over the weekend and not only is it not done hitting milestones, it’s not even done growing its theater count.
