Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America: Brave New World once again landed the number one spot at the domestic box office last weekend, scoring over $28 million in its second weekend and doubling the second place finisher, The Monkey, as it made its first foray onto the big screen, opening just above $14 million from 3,200 locations. This weekend, three new wide releases will make their debuts, but for at least one more week, Captain America will remain the widest release in the land.

New to theaters this weekend comes the true-life survival thriller, Last Breath. The film recounts the harrowing rescue of a crewmate by his fellow seasoned divers as he is stranded alone at the bottom of the freezing North Sea with no oxygen. Starting out in 3,018 theaters, the film stars Simu Liu, Finn Cole, and film veteran Woody Harrelson, with Alex Parkinson directing. The film is based on Parkinson’s 2019 documentary of the same name.

Available in 780 locations this weekend is My Dead Friend Zoe. The movie follows the journey of a U.S. Army veteran named Merit who struggles to reconnect with her family and move on from her past due to the lingering presence of her deceased best friend, Zoe. The film stars Sonequa Martin-Green and Natalie Morales as Merit and Zoe, respectively. Hollywood veterans Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman join the cast in this dark comedy drama from Briarcliff Entertainment.

Making its way into 1,004 venues this weekend is Dito Montiel-directed crime comedy, Riff Raff. The film stars a rather impressive lead ensemble cast, including Ed Harris, Bill Murray, Lewis Pullman, and Jennifer Coolidge, among others. The movie follows the life of a former criminal who now, more than anything, just wants to live a normal life, but chaos erupts when his son and ex-wife show up with an ominous warning that notorious gangsters are gunning for him.

Rounding out the top five this weekend is the aforementioned current box office winner, Brave New World, logging in 3,800 cinemas for its third weekend. Occupying the second place spot is Paddington in Peru, available in 3,705 movie houses. Still holding on in 3,052 locations is Dog Man, and lastly, The Monkey, the film rolled into 3,200 theaters last weekend and will add seven locations this weekend for a total of 3,227 theaters.

Looking ahead to next weekend, we see a plethora of wide releases making their theatrical debuts. These include the long-awaited Mickey 17, In the Lost Lands, and Night of the Zoopocalypse, among others. We will update those counts as they arrive.
