Theater Averages: Galaxy Grabs $33,704 on Theater Average Chart

Not only did Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 earn first place on the weekend box office chart, it was also the top film on the theater average chart earning an average of $33,704. This is the fourth best result of the year so far, second best for a wide release. (Beauty and the Beast is still the best of the year with an average of $41,508.) Second place went to the re-release of Stalker with $20,540 in its lone theater. The Lovers was the only other film in the $10,000 club with an average of $16,572 in four theaters.

There was a large number of other new limited releases, most of which struggled. Chuck was the best of the rest with an average of $8,641 in four theaters, while A Woman’s Life did okay with an average of $5,742 in two theaters. This is Not What I Expected was further back with an average of $3,757 in 36 theaters. Mr. Chibbs was only playing in one theater and earned $3,163, while Three Generations was right behind with an average of $3,022 in six theaters. Like Crazy struggled with an average of $2,900 in two theaters. Risk barely avoided the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,245 in 34 theaters.

Burden wasn’t as lucky only making an average of $1,616 in two theaters. The Dinner was playing in over 500 theaters, which is usually too many for a limited release. It certainly was too many this time around, as the film bombed with an an average of $1,298. That was just ahead of Take Me, which earned an average of $1,292 in two theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

• Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer reached $1 million over the weekend. It is holding onto its theater average as its expands, so it should have no trouble getting into more theaters.
• Their Finest topped $2 million just before the weekend and was nearly halfway to $3 million. It is holding on a lot better than expected, which is good news for the studio.
• Sleight hit $3 million late in the weekend. $4 million will very likely be its final milestone.
• The Lost City of Z made it to $5 million before the weekend and $6 million during the weekend. It’s going to start losing theaters at an accelerated pace, so $10 million is likely out of the question.
• The Zookeeper’s Wife made it all the way to $15 million over the weekend. That’s impressive for a limited release, but it is no longer the best limited release of the year.
• Baahubali 2: The Conclusion also got to $15 million over the weekend. It should be able to get to $20 million, maybe. Bollywood films tend to have very short legs.
• How to Be a Latin Lover hit $20 million over the weekend, making it the first limited release of the year to get to that milestone, getting there just ahead of Gifted, which will get there before the weekend.
