Home Market Releases for June 25th, 2019

June 26, 2019

Captain Marvel

It is an absolute nightmare on the home market. There’s no monster hit to talk about, but there are a mountain of new releases that are selling well enough that they could have been featured in the main list and about twice as many that could have been included in the Secondary Blu-ray release. I had to trim some of them to keep the list manageable. Unfortunately, the list of Pick of the Week contenders is rather short with just Megalobox: Season One and Frankie Drake Mysteries: Season Two, both of which are worth owning. However, the biggest and best release of the week is Captain Marvel. The screener arrived late, but I finally got the review of the Blu-ray online. That said, I’m going to award Frankie Drake Mysteries with Puck of the Week for best Canadian release.

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand or Video on Demand (With Bonus Features)
The first release of the week is late screener for one of the few bright spots at the box office this year. Is it as good as its box office numbers would indicate? Or was it carried by the M.C.U. brand? Read our review to find out.

Cinderella - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Movie Only) or Video on Demand (With Bonus)
The original Cinderella was inducted into the National Film Registry and to celebrate, everything with the the Cinderella brand is getting re-released on the home market. The original is hitting Blu-ray this week, while the live-action remake is coming out on 4K HD Ultra HD. Meanwhile, the sequels hit VOD last week.

Dumbo - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
The weakest of the live-action Disney remakes. It’s not terrible, but it is just so unnecessary.

Frankie Drake Mysteries: Season Two

Frankie Drake Mysteries: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A Canadian murder mystery show set in the 1920s. It’s a fun show and I really enjoyed season one, although I haven’t had a chance to see season two, yet. There’s a good chance I’ll be picking it up shortly.

Furie - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I put in a request for a screener for this film and I’m really looking forward to watching it. The reviews are excellent and it looks right up my alley. Extras are limited to a behind-the-scenes featurette, but this isn’t uncommon for a foreign-language import.

The Illusionist - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I own the DVD that came out years ago and I put in a request for the Blu-ray. Hopefully it will arrive soon, as there is a growing backlog of screeners I’m waiting for.

Lost Highway - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This is one of David Lynch’s weaker films. It looks great, but the story falls apart in the end. It’s still worth checking out, but I think a rental will be enough for most people.

The Master of Ragnarok & Blesser of Einherjar: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
One of the worst Harem / Isekai Anime around. Avoid at all costs.

Megalobox: Season 1

Megalobox: Season 1 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the best sports Anime from the past several years. It is about a futuristic form of boxing that uses powered exoskeletons to enhance a boxers speed and power. Extras include interviews and audio dramas, while the limited edition comes with a booklet.

Overlord: Season Three - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This season is earning the best reviews of the three seasons so far, which is extra impressive as the first two seasons were among the best Anime of their respective seasons.

War and Peace: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is the 1960s Russian version of the movie, which is widely considered one of the best of its era. It is also seven hours long, before you take into account the extras, so you might want to call in sick to give yourself enough time to watch it all.
