Theater counts: Scream and Belle debut but Spider-Man retains its grip

January 13th, 2022

Spider-Man: No Way Home

After an 11-year hiatus, Ghostface is back, terrifying the townspeople of Woodsboro. The first film in the Scream franchise not to be directed by Wes Craven, Scream (colloquially known as Scream 5) is helmed by the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, both of whom previously directed 2014’s Devil’s Due, and 2019’s Ready or Not. Through its first four films, between 1996 and 2011, the franchise has earned just over $600 million worldwide. The latest installment, which had a $24-million production budget, brings back franchise veterans Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell along with a cast of new faces. Scream will open in 3,664 theaters. Also opening in wide release this week is the Japanese animated science fantasy film Belle. The film, which was the third-highest-grossing Japanese film of 2021, is set to arrive in an estimated 1,300 locations. More...

Theater counts: The 355 not enough to unseat Spider-Man

January 6th, 2022

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Last week was all about Spider-Man: No Way Home as we experienced a week where no new wide releases opened. While this week won’t be a drastic change in that regard, we do see one film open wide with the release of the all-female espionage thriller, The 355. The film follows a globe-trotting quartet of women, each with a particular set of unique skills, who must forge a tenuous loyalty that could protect the world—or get them killed. The 355 opens in 3,145 theaters. More...

Featured Blu-ray: Beautiful Girls

March 26th, 2013

Echo Bridge Home Entertainment is a distributor that specializes in releasing bargain DVD and Blu-rays for films that are generally forgotten. I don't think it is unfair to say that. I was a little surprised to see they were releasing Beautiful Girls on Blu-ray, and it was the film's Blu-ray debut. Has this film been forgotten? Granted, it has been a while since I've seen this movie, but I remember really liking it. Is it as good as I remember? And is the Blu-ray worth picking up? More...

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 13th, 2012

November 13th, 2012

New releases this week are dominated by one title, Brave. The second best selling title according to Amazon.com is Lawrence of Arabia, which is a film that should be in everyone's collection, but as a catalog title, it likely won't sell a huge number of units. The third best selling title according to Amazon.com is Duck Dynasty: Season One. That's not a good sign. Fortunately, Brave is clearly Pick of the Week material with the Blu-ray Combo Pack or 3D Combo Pack battling for that honor. More...

Featured DVD Review: The Cottage

November 10th, 2012

The Cottage is the second film of this name that I've reviewed. The first The Cottage I reviewed was okay, but couldn't blend two very different genres into a cohesive whole. Will this The Cottage have more success finding a cohesive narrative? More...

Featured TV on DVD Review: Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Jake Saves Bucky

October 13th, 2012

Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Jake Saves Bucky is the second DVD release from the show that I've gotten the chance to review. I liked Yo Ho, Mateys Away!, but is this DVD also worth picking up? More...
