Theater Counts: American Assassin Opens in 3,154 Locations

It’ll take a lot for any movie to catch up with It this weekend, and the task won’t be made any easier by the fact that the current box office champ is gaining an extra 45 theaters. (Which mean 45 theater managers must have been watching last weekend’s box office reports fairly enviously, one would imagine.) American Assassin will have the biggest shot, but is opening in 3,154 theaters: almost a thousand less than It’s 4,148.

Paramount is opening mother! in 2,368 theaters this weekend, and results for that film could land anywhere, if you ask me. It will certainly be a good test of Jennifer Lawrence’s box office draw. Our Bankability Index doesn’t yet put her at the top of the pile, in spite of her impressive resumé over the past few years. If she can lead a film like this to big box office results, it’ll do a lot to cement her place as the most valuable actress in Hollywood.

Looking ahead to next weekend, two films, Kingsman: The Golden Circle and The Lego Ninjago Movie, are both expected to open big, and both are expected to play in around 3,900 theaters, per today’s estimates from the distributors.
