The Numbers Predict the Academy Awards Competition 2013

The Numbers readers scored again on Sunday night, correctly predicting that Argo would pick up the award for Best Picture and taking our Oscar contest's score to 13 out of 16 correct Best Picture predictions since we started running the contest in 1998. Overall, the contest vote-toppers predicted 17 out of the 24 winners for a strike rate over 70%. Our biggest miss was probably for Best Animated Feature, where Brave beat out the favorite, Wreck-It Ralph, leaving us with a record of 10 out of 12 for Best Animated Feature.

And the winners of our contest are:

First Place Winner: Preston Nicholson wins all nine Best Picture nominees on DVD or Blu-ray, with 21 correct predictions submitted on February 18.

Second Place Winner: Jacob wins Argo and Brave on DVD or Blu-ray, also with 21 correct predictions, but submitted at 11am on February 20.

We'll be contacting Preston and Jacob soon to set up delivery of their prizes. Congratulations to everyone who entered, and particularly to the five others who scored 21 out of 24.

2013 Awards Season: Argo Unites a Divided Night at the Oscars

February 25, 2013

Argo was the big winner at the Oscars last night, although arguably, there were no big winners, but a lot of films that shared in the glory. There were also some pretty interesting twists and a few events that stand out. Due to ongoing computer difficulties, I was unable to live-blog the Oscars this year. I will still be giving my reactions on a category by category basis, but not in the order they were handed out. More...

Independent Spirit Award were handed out yesterday and while the average moviegoer will be more focused on the Oscars tonight, a lot of great films were honored yesterday. This includes Silver Linings Playbook, which took home numerous awards, including the top prizes.

2013 Awards Season: Oscar Highlight: Best Picture

February 22, 2013

With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try to figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. We wrap up our look at the prestigious categories with the most prestigious of them all: Best Picture. Like last year, there are nine nominees. Unlike last year, none of them were completely out of left field. That's not to say they all have a legitimate shot at winning; there's definitely a favorite. However, politics could become an issue. I don't mean politics as in Democrat vs. Republican. I mean behind-the-scenes issues might play a bigger role than what is on the screen. Let's take a look at the nominees, and their chances to claiming the crown on Sunday. More...

2013 Awards Season: Oscar Highlight: Best Director

February 22, 2013

With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. Today we will look at the Best Director, which is one of the stranger races this year. Before Awards Season began, I thought Kathryn Bigelow would be the favorite. She wasn't even nominated. The evidence suggests Ben Affleck will win. But again, he wasn't even nominated. So with the top two choices not even on the list of nominees, we are looking at the best of the rest. More...

2013 Awards Season: Oscar Highlight: Best Original Screenplay

February 21, 2013

With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. Today we will look at the two writing categories, finishing with Best Original Screenplay. There are actually three films that could win that and it wouldn't be a total shock if they did. That said, there is still a favorite to contend with. More...

2013 Awards Season: Oscar Highlight: Best Adapted Screenplay

February 21, 2013

With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. Today we will look at the two writing categories, starting with Best Adapted Screenplay. This is a race that is not as close as many thought it would be, and it is not the two early front-runners running away with the Oscar. More...

2013 Awards Season: Oscar Highlight: Best Lead Actress

February 21, 2013

With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. This week we will look at the four acting categories, finishing with Best Lead Actress. This race is easily the most competitive of the four acting categories this year. The person seen as the favorite has switched, more than once, and at the moment, I'm not sure who is going to win. More...

2013 Awards Season: Oscar Highlight: Best Lead Actor

February 21, 2013

With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. This week we will look at the four acting categories, continuing with Best Lead Actor. This category is not truly competitive, but I'm supporting an underdog. More...

2013 Awards Season: Oscar Highlight: Best Supporting Actor

February 21, 2013

With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. This week we will look at the four acting categories, continuing with Best Supporting Actor. This category is more competitive than Best Supporting Actress, but even so, it is mostly a two horse race. More...

2013 Awards Season: Oscar Highlight: Best Supporting Actress

February 21, 2013

With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. This week we will look at the four acting categories, starting with Best Supporting Actress, which is again not a very competitive category this year. I'm not saying it is impossible for upset to happen here, but it is very, very unlikely. More...

2013 Awards Season: Argo's Wins go From Zero to Thirty

February 19, 2013

Argo continues its winning ways at the WGAs this weekend. It has become the defacto favorite for the Oscars, despite the high profile Oscar snub. More...

2013 Awards Season: Oscar Contest: Category Highlight: Best Feature-Length Documentary

February 6, 2013

With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. Today we look at Best Feature-Length Documentary, which is probably not as competitive as I thought it would be. There are two films that earned perfect reviews, so it should be a close race between those two for the Oscar, right? More...

2013 Awards Season: Oscar Contest: Category Highlight: Best Animated Feature

February 6, 2013

With our annual Oscar Prediction contest underway, now is the best time to look at the nominees and try and figure out who the favorites are and which films should just feel honored to be nominated. Today we look at Best Animated Feature Film, which is surprisingly competitive this year, especially compared to most years. There is a Pixar film nominated, but it isn't the overwhelming favorite. In fact, all five films have a legitimate shot at winning, although there are some with better chances than others. More...

2013 Awards Season: Argo Adds to Awards Season Haul

February 3, 2013

Directors Guild of America Awards were this weekend and the big winner shouldn't surprise too many people, assuming they've been paying attention. Argo won yet again and given this, Ben Affleck should be the favorite to win an Oscar at the end of the month... except he wasn't even nominated. More...

2013 Awards Season: Lincoln's Double-Win Still Leaves it Behind Argo

January 28, 2013

The SAG handed out their awards over the weekend and while Lincoln took home two awards, Argo continues its surprising run by winning the big award of the night. More...

January 28, 2013

Producers Guild of America gave out their awards over the weekend, and there were a couple surprises, including a big win for Argo. More...

2013 Awards Season: DGA Diverge From Oscars

January 14, 2013

The Directors Guild of America handed out their nominations for Feature Films last week and Documentaries today. No, I have no idea why they split up their announcements. Usually, there's a lot of overlap between the DGAs and the Oscars, but that's not the case this year, so we again have some surprises. More...

2013 Awards Season: Les Mis Leads Ways as Surprises Dominate

January 14, 2013

Hollywood Foreign Press Association handed out their awards last night, and the trend of surprises continues. Les Miserables led the way with three awards, only one of which I was truly expecting. Meanwhile, Argo won more awards than Lincoln. I don't think anyone was predicting that. More...

2013 Awards Season: Lincoln Oversees a Divided Group of Nominees

January 10, 2013

The Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and there's certainly a lot to talk about. There are some nominations that should surprise no one. For instance, Lincoln led the way with twelve nominations, and it has been seen as the major contender for a long time. However, there were also a few surprise nominations and some major snubs. Here are the list of nominations, and some reactions. More...

2013 Awards Season: WGAs Leaves Analysts In the Dark

January 7, 2013

Surprises seems to be the word of the day, as the WGA nominations included a number of them. Granted, Zero Dark Thirty and a lot of the other films that have earned Awards Season success thus far were here, but there were almost as many surprises as there were obvious choices. More...

2013 Awards Season: PGA Produces a Few Surprises

December 12, 2012

SAG nominations were announced and there were only a few surprises to deal with. Leading the way for total nominations was The Silver Linings Playbook, Lincoln, and Les Miserables, all of which earned nominations in four of the six categories. More...

Awards Season: Silver Linings for Limited Releases

November 28, 2012

The Independent Spirit Awards has a special place in the Awards Season. The nominations are the unoffficial start of Awards Season, but the actual awards aren't given out until Oscar weekend, so they are the beginning at the end of Awards Season. They also help out a lot of limited releases that would otherwise not get enough buzz, although they are not so good at predicting Oscar wins. This year, two films tied for most nominations, Moonrise Kingdom and The Silver Linings Playbook, both of which earned five nominations. They weren't the only films to earn multiple nominations though. More...
